Many of us are guilty of letting our fuel drop in to the red, not even knowing sometimes when or where we are going to get fuel from, but could this simple mistake be costing us?

With many cars now fitted with a fuel gauge that not only shows you how much furl you have left but also an estimates number of miles, we can easily rely upon this and drive the car until it only shows 10 or so miles left before refuelling.

According to insurer LV, 827,000 motorists had to be rescued after running out of fuel last year. The insurer says the number of drivers breaking down with empty tanks has risen year-on-year since 2011. Breaking down for any reason can be very dangerous and can cause knock on accidents but breaking down due to running out of fuel could easily be avoided. Running out of fuel not only lead to a call out from your recovery company but it can actually damage your car. For instance, if you run out of petrol, your fuel pump can suck in the dirt on the bottom of the tank, clogging it and forcing a costly replacement.
